The 2017 Hawke’s Bay Tourism Awards are open!

Are you ready to enter?

The 6th annual Hawke’s Bay Tourism Industry Awards will be held on August 24th at the Napier Conference Centre. The Hawke’s Bay Tourism Indutsry Awards will recognise local tourism providers delivering exceptional visitor experiences.

The Hawke’s Bay Tourism Awards recognise the best tourism businesses and experiences in Hawke’s Bay. This is your chance as a tourism business to put yourself out there, to be judged by some seriously smart people and potentially be recognised for your efforts amongst your tourism colleagues.

There are two parts to the Awards entry process – the written component and (if you make it through to the next round) – a one-on–one visit by members of the judging team to see and experience your business. The written component is worth 30% of your overall score and the visit to your business 70%.

We have changed a few things in 2017 so have a read below and see where you fit!

  • Accommodation Award– this category showcases the best places to stay in the region. There will be a “Small Accommodation” and a “Large Accommodation” category. If your property has 10 rooms or less you will fall into the Small Accommodation category, 11 rooms and above will put you in the Large Accommodation category.
  • Visitor Experience Award – this has previously been called the Activity or Attraction Award. Any activity or attraction provider can enter this category. You will need to describe the experience you deliver to your customers and how you measure its success. *Depending on the number of entries, this category may be split between small businesses (less than 5 full time staff) and large businesses (greater than 5 full time staff).
  • Innovation Award– this is a new category and is about recognising businesses that have introduced a new product or service within their existing business. You will need to explain why you did this, how it fits within your overall business plan and what results you have achieved.
  • Essence of Hawke’s Bay Award– this is another new award. Do you think you deliver the essence of Hawke’s Bay? How do you showcase Hawke’s Bay, what do you think makes what you do quintessentially Hawke’s Bay. This is open to restaurants, wineries, tourism providers, tour guides, and events.

Winners in each category will be judged for the Supreme Award.

Our judges are Oscar Nathan GM Destination Rotorua, Liz Read Director Reputation Matters, Wayne Walford CEO Chamber of Commerce in Hawke’s Bay and Fenton Wilson Hawke’s Bay Regional Councillor and Hawke’s Bay Tourism Board Member.

They will be looking for you to be concise and clear in your answers, to show why and how you have chosen to do what you do and importantly to show the results of what you have done and the learnings you have taken from those results to continuously improve and grow your business.

Why Enter?

Celebrating your successes within the tourism sector goes beyond our own industry. Upon receiving your Award your organisations profile will increase as an example of excellence in New Zealand Tourism.

Takaro Trails won the 2016 Supreme award, here is what Jenny Ryan had to say about the awards.

“One of the key benefits of the Tourism Awards comes from simply entering. It provides a reason to pause and reflect and really take stock of where your business is at, what’s worked, what hasn’t, where from here etc. As busy people we can run the risk of getting caught up in operational issues and just lurch from one season to the next with no real plan for the future. Not good. So I really enjoy having the judges come into my business with fresh eyes and advice as we can get too close at times and start missing the obvious. To get the perspective and guidance from experienced people for FREE is an opportunity any business owner or manager would be mad not to exploit! Winning the Supreme Award was of course a huge personal thrill for me and a real bonus for Takaro Trails in terms of reputation and exposure, but I’m sincere when I say there’s a ‘win’ for everyone who makes the effort to enter, so just get to it!”
